and the commentary of the Director of Public
Works thercon.
6. The Unofficial Members of Council
undoubtedly share the disappointment at the figure fixed for the original subsidy, viz,
£100,000 and indeed the point was made in the Unofficial speeches in the legislative Council Meeting
when the Estimates were discussed (vide my
despatch No. 456 of 5th October 1928).
They are
not likely in these circumstances to be ready to vote further sums for an extension which may be
desirable in view of future possibilities but is not necessary for such development of Commercial aviation as can reasonably be anticipated for
sometime to come.
77. The general lay-out as suggested by Mr. Dawson will be accepted by the Colony but in passing it may be pointed out that the area reserved for Royal Air Force use is twentyeight
acres at the better end with room beyond for further building extensions, while the area to be set apart for Commercial Aviation is approximately
twelve acres with further resumption necessary
if and when serious extensions are required.
A more important aspect of this question is
however the matter of the Gaol Site concerning
which again there seems to have been considerable misapprehension. This site the area dged with dotted red lines in the plans under despatch No.
226 of 25th April 1928 is not properly a part of the area originally included in the Kai Tak
scheme
